Guide to seasonal vegetables - April

spring onions, carrots, lettuce, beetroots, parsnip, rhubarb

There may be less vegetables ready to be harvested in spring, but there are still some delicious homegrown varieties available such as wild garlic and rhubarb. This guide to seasonal vegetables in April will help you to eat with the seasons. With over 40 recipe suggestions included.

vegetables in season in the UK in April

Spring is in full flow outdoors and while it has traditionally been a time of scarcity for homegrown produce, April has some delicious treats available.

What is the hungry gap?

April is the start of the hungry gap, the time when the winter stores of roots and cabbages start to run out and before the summer crops are ready to be harvested.

In the past this was often a time of great hardship, but because we import so much food nowadays most shoppers don't even notice.

However, if you'd like to eat seasonally you may notice that you have less choice this month - but still some delicious options.

Read on for my guide to seasonal vegetables in April.
