Spring is in full flow outdoors and while it has traditionally been a time of scarcity for homegrown produce, April has some delicious treats available.
What is the hungry gap?
April is the start of the hungry gap, the time when the winter stores of roots and cabbages start to run out and before the summer crops are ready to be harvested.
In the past this was often a time of great hardship, but because we import so much food nowadays most shoppers don't even notice.
