I love making my own hummus.

A tin of chickpeas and a jar of tahini paste are pretty much essential items in my pantry.

And I always know I can whip up a bowl of the delicious chickpea-based dip in minutes.

Although classic hummus is always a favourite there are so many ways it can be varied.

Adding a spoonful of spicy harissa adds the most delicious flavour and colour to hummus.

What is harissa paste?

Harissa is a spicy chilli-based paste from north Africa.

The main ingredients are roasted red peppers, garlic, caraway, coriander, cumin and olive oil. It is utterly delicious and while you can make your own, it’s readily available in most supermarkets.

If you would like to make your own harissa paste try this recipe by Simply Sensational Food.

How difficult is harissa hummus to make?

As long as you have a food processor* it’s pretty easy to make your own hummus. Harissa hummus is no exception.

Simply place all the ingredients, including the harissa paste, into the food processor and pulse until combined. Add water a few drops at a time until you have your preferred consistency.

When serving you can add extra harissa paste to make it look really pretty.

What should you serve with harissa hummus?

You can serve this spicy hummus in any way you’d use regular hummus.

Here are some serving ideas for you:

  • as part of a mezze meal
  • with salads
  • alongside couscous and roasted vegetables
  • with flatbreads or pitta
  • with other dips
  • in a sandwich
  • with crackers or oat cakes

What ingredients do you need to make this?

Here are the ingredients you will need to have in order to make harissa hummus:

  • 400 g tin of chickpeas
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 2 tbsp tahini
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp harissa
  • Sea salt to taste
  • 1-2 tbsp water
  • extra olive oil and harissa paste to serve

Do you need any special equipment to make this?

You will need a food processor* or high powered blender* to make this. I find it works best in my food processor.

If you only have a hand held blender* you can use that but you’ll end up with a chunkier consistency. It’ll still taste great though!
